a stitch in time

sometimes, when you are waiting at a stoplight on your bike, the weird second pocket of your new work pants gets caught on the horn of your saddle and then the light changes and you rip your pants.

or maybe your old jeans are getting a hole where your cell phone rubs.

both of these examples are great times to use my favorite patching method- adapted from a method taught to me by sarah who learned it from a fellow who learned it from his housekeeper in south america...

step one: cut a patch with pinked edges and sew it on the inside of the pants over the hole or thin spot.

step two: flip the pants right side out and sew back and forth over the patched area to bind the two pieces together. i like to make somewhat neat patterns, but it works just as well- or better- if you run the machine back and forth pretty randomly.

note: if you have the right color thread, and you catch the hole before it gets too serious, this patch can be nearly invisible. usually, i don't have the right color thread and i wait too long, so the pants can no longer be considered "nice," but it will keep a pair of work pants going for months or years longer, with just a few minute's work.
